Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1947 LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
IT is now little more than six weeks to the Local Body Elections 1947. Nominations close on October 29. In both County and Borough the election promises to be a crucial one, in which the elected personnel will largely dictate the future course of the policy to be followed. Most striking feature to date lies in the decision of no less than six veteran members of the Borough Council including the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) not to seek i'e-election.' This leaves less than fifty per cent, of the old Council to carry forward the administration of the Borough over a very crucial period.] Prospective nominations are we understand already listed and an election is inevitable. The danger however lies in the almost wholesale loss of municipally minded councillors who are taking with them the complete background and knowledge of the town’s development and requisite amenities, to say nothing of the intricacies of the financial structure and obligations. While therefore it is a very welcome sign to note the ‘new blood’ coming forward so readily, it would be well in the interests of the ratepayers if some of the retiring members could be prevailed upon to reconsider their decision and again offer their services to the ratepayers.
