FOOD FOR BRITAIN
NOT since the war, when patriotism in this country reached new heights, has such a wave of sympathy and effort gripped the community in its effort to despatch food to Britain. Tens of thousands of food parcels are pouring' out every month, destined to relieve want in the hard-pressed homes of Britain. It has to be remembered also that many individuals in this country are not only assisting personally but are also co-operating through numerous organisations to which they belong and through which regular relief is despatched. New Zealanders are proving that the old spirit of ready hospitality and spontaneous giving which marked the pioneers of early settlement days, is not only living but is more pronounced than ever.
Benefit Match The St. John Ambulance Brigade has given good service to Rugby players injured durihg the season and readers will be pleased to note that profits from, the match on Saturday will be donated to the Brigade.
Indian Leader’s Birthday Premises of Indian business men throughout closed yesterday to mark the birthday of Mahatma Ghandi. The event was commemorated at Rotorua 'when local and visiting Indians joined together to celebrate the occasion.
