YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB
ENJOYABLE FIELD DAY The Awakeri Young Farmers' Club held its field day for this month on Tuesday, September 23, at the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company’s factory. Before lunch members were shown through the factory by the manager, Mr Becker, who explained, at appropriate moments during the tour, the various processes to which the cream was subjected before it left the factory as boxes of butter. Mr Becker gave an interesting demonstration on one of the new cardboard cartons, showing members the many movements involved in making one into a butter box.
Mr C. Martin, the club chairman, thanked Mr Becker on behalf of the club.
After lunch the laboratory was visited where Mr Hodson gave members a very interesting talk on “bugs” in general in relation to the cowshed. One breed of these was shown to the members on slides under the new microscope at different magnifications up to almost 1000. Tests for hard and soft water and the degrees of “bugginess” in poor cream were also interestingly demonstrated.
Mr Hodson, after being thanked by the club, reiterated the opinion given earlier in the day by Mr Becker that suppliers should get more familiar with their factory by visiting it at. times other than when they were in trouble.
