COUNTY BOUNDARY

INCLUSION OF WAINUI PETITION TO GOVERNORGENERAL The approach by the Wainui settlers to the Whakatane County Council for transfer from the Opotiki County into the Whakatane area, has been advanced a further stage, in the form of a definite refusal from the Opotiki body to consider the transfer. This intimation was conveyed in a letter to the Whakatane Council at its meeting last Tuesday.

The Opotiki County Council stated briefly that after duly considering the letter of the 26th August 1947, decided to adhere to the resolutions passed on the 4th July 1947 which were conveyed in a letter dated the'24th July 1947. The Council consider they have made a generous offer, and regret they cannot agree to the request of the Wainui Settlers.”

Without discussing the matter the Council decided to adopt the recommendation of the Finance Committee as under:—

“That whereas the Whakatane County Council on the 27th day of May 1947 duly passed a resolution agreeing to the proposed alteration of boundaries between the Whakatane and Opotiki Counties as set out in a Petition of certain Opotiki County ratepayers dated the 28th day of April 1947 and in the schedule to the said resolution and whereas such resolution was duly notified to the Opotiki County Council which Council has failed for a period of over three months from the said 27th day of May 1947 to pass a resolution agreeing to the same alteration of boundaries now therefore the Whakatane County Council hereby resolves as follows: 1. That this Council proceed with the exercise of the powers conferred on it by Section 14 (3) of the Counties Act 1920 by presenting a Fetition to the Governor-General rel uesting that the proposed alteration of boundaries be made. 2. That the said Petition be executed by this Council under the Seal of the County.

3. That such further and other action and procedure in the premises as may be requisite and necessary be taken by this Council with a view to obtaining the issue of a Proclamation giving effect to the proposed alteration of boundaries.
