TAURANGA HARBOUR
RATES FROM MAT AT A MOVE FOR SUCCESSION The recent move to transfer the district of Matata as a contributory area to the Tauranga Harbour Board away from that area, was discussed by the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday when the chairman was asked to discuss the whole subject with the Marine Department when in Wellington. Acknowledging the Council’s previous letter on the subject the Department stated that it has been advised that the consent of the lenders of the loan was not necessary but that if the transfer were effected, the Matata Riding would, until the present Tauranga Harbour Board loans were repaid, remain liable for interest and sinking fund payments on account of Tauranga loans.. The Department agreed with that interpretation, but even if the Tauranga Harbour Board were willing that the Matata Riding should be removed from out of the Tauranga Harbour District, the Department would still not consent to the Matata Riding being removed from the Tauranga Harbour District unless the lenders of the loans were agreeable to it. The Department would still require the assurance of the lenders of the loans that they raise no objection to the Matata Riding being transferred from the Tauranga Harbour District, but of course the Department could not insist that the lenders of the loans should forego their right to oblige the ratepayers in the Matata Riding to meet any obligations under the loans until the loans were redeemed.
