EDGECUMBE RAIL LINK
COUNTY COUNCIL’S INTEREST REPRESENTATION TO MINISTER Writing the Whakatane County Council yesterday the Chamber of Commerce enclosed a copy of a letter to the Minister of Works urging immediate construction of the above rail link to facilitate access to the timber resources of the Murupara district, and requesting the Council’s support.
The chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) considered that it would be in the Council’s interest to make enquiries of the Minister of Works as to just what plans he had in mind. Cr- Cawte said that the whole of the Galatea district was behind the move to instal the proposed link with Edgecumbe. It was agreed by the authorities that it was only a matter of gaining Government sanction, for the whole undertaking to be put into effect. It was purely a machine job, with no serious obstacles in the way. Its construction was being pressed for by the State Forest Department and P.W.D. was only awaiting word to start what was considered would be only a two years job.
The chairman said he was very glad to hear that the scheme had been so far advanced. The Council decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman when in Wellington to make suitable representations to the Minister of Works seeking all information possible on the proposed link.
