Herepuru Road—Gone “How is the Herepuru Road going?” asked Cr Hunter at yesterday’s meeting of the County Council. “Gone” came the sardonic rejoinder from across the horseshoe table. The council laughed!
Health Stamp Covers Distribution of first-day covers for the 1947-48 issue of health stamps started yesterday. There were numerous requests at the Whakatane Post Office but the supply is expected to be sufficient to meet all demands. The stamps will be on sale from October 1.
Famine Emergency Campaign The total value of ration coupons received at the Whakatane Post Office last week was: Butter lib.; meat £1 14s 8d; sugar nil; tea nil; fats nil. Grasses and clovers', especially the latter are beginning to make strong growth and although there is not yet the full lesponse in production, it is the general opinion that we are in for a good season. Many farmers are looking forward to the 29th, when they can profitably dispense with the “passengers” in their herds at the Galatea Sale. Red Cross Stall
On Friday next the local branch of the Red Cross Society will hold its Street Appeal and Stall. As in the past the public of Whakatane can be expected to respond generously. Donations of produce, preserves, handwork and saleable goods of all kinds may be left at the stall next the Grand Theatre. The proceeds will be devoted to the General Purposes and the Food for Britain Fund. ■ * • .
Settling The Land “Talk of settling the land and of getting greater'production,” said Cr McCready at yesterday’s meeting of the Whakatane County Council. “When we hear of farmers being treated like this—paying hundreds of pounds for an access bridge when if their own representations had been listened to it would have cost only a fraction of the cost, we realise that these men are being settled alright—so that they won’t have a kick left.” Edgecumbe Bazgar
Readers attention is drawn to the Bazaar being held at the Presbyterian Church Hall, Edgecumbe, on Saturday next. Stalls of every kind, just laden with good things, luscious home-made cakes, dressed poultry and pressed cooked meals, garden fresh vegetables and farm produce, etc. The children too are being well catered for. For those who wish to be early, a tasty light luncheon will be available and later a delicious afternoon tea. So wend your way to the Church Hall, Edgecumbe, and support this worthy effort.
