WHAKATANE CLUB MEETING OPENING IN MONTH’S TIME The Whakatane Lawn Tennis Club held its annual meeting before a ‘packed house’ last Tuesday evening. Club officials were somewhat staggered at the large attendance and were assured that the game was swiftly increasing locally in popularity. Mr Phil Bryers, Club President, in his comprehensive report outlined the club’s past progress and immediate prospects. The coming season’s officials were elected as follows: Patron: Chairman of the Domain Board. President: Mr Phil Bryers (reelected). Secretary: Mr K. E. Francis. Assistant Secretary: Miss Hodges. Treasurer: Mr Pax Collins. Club Captain: Mr Ken Mcßae. Assistant Club Captain: Mr Chas. Wells. Executive Committee: Mr L. Lovelock, Mr H. Mahy, Mr Eric Wilson, Mr Tom Hall, Miss Rapley, Mrs V. Jessop, Mrs Hancock, Mrs Ingle. The president in calling for consideration of the next rate of subscriptions pointed out that the School Courts would be available for Sunday play and the five grass courts should be fit for play at the end of January. Maintenance called for a higher subscription if the club was to remain sound financially. Subscription rates were passed as follows:
Men £3 with 5/- rebate for punctual payment. Ladies £2 10/- with 5/- rebate for punctual payment. Married couples an additional rebate of 5/- each.
Junior members up to age of 18, £1 with restricted privileges, as regards hours of play. - Saturday, October 11, was selected as the club’s opening day and an endeavour would be made to run a dance on that evening.
