WHAKATANE CLUB CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The first round in each grade of the Whakatane Club Championships played on Saturday resulted as follows: Senior: Cradwick beat Carter; A. Morpeth beat Steel; A. P. Smith beat Woodham; I. Wylds beat Ducker; D. Morpeth beat Spence; Hyland beat Milne; Hockin beat D.* Luxton. Intermediate: Henderson beat Alexander; Roach beat Berg; A. Bridger beat Harvey; Mussett beat L. Luxton; Combes beat C. Wylds; Suckling beat Tippett; L. B. Smith beat Tomlinson; Littlejohn beat Burke. Junior: Canning beat B. Butler; Reynolds beat E. Hay; Stone beat Shaw; Bushett beat Jarrett; White beat Shuker. The second round will be played next Saturday, the draw is as follows: Senior: Cradwick v A. Morpeth; A. P. Smith v winner of Moore and Pattison; I. Wylds v D. Morpeth; Hyland v Hockin. Intermediate: Henderson v Roach; Bridger v Mussett; Combes v Suckling; L. B. Smith v Littlejohn. Junior: Canning v Reynolds; Stone v winner of Murray* and Morgan; Bushett v Howat; Gartshore v White. ' ! ’ Inter-club Matches The return match with Rotorua on the Whakatane links provided the usual pleasant and keenly played games. In spite of the strong westerly wind some excellent golf was seen, the visitors showing their appreciation of the greens in particular when it came to putting. The home side won 14 games 'to Rotorua’s 10, with 2 all square. Next Sunday the Te Puke Club will send a team to play Whakatane, whose side will be picked at the clubhouse on Saturday. The best cards in last Saturday’s Bogey competition, were: W. Henderson 1 up; R. Butler 3 down.
TE TEKO LADIES’ CLUB WEEKEND RESULTS Owing to the Point to Point meeting being held on the Domain, there will be no competition this week. The fifth round -for the President’s and Captain’s points prizes will be played in conjunction with the second round of the Eclectic competition next week. The results of last week’s competition were: ‘B’ Grade Bogey: Miss Murray 5 do\vn; ‘C’ Grade Medal (10 holes): Mrs Caldwell 60—4—56. The finals of the senior championship were played at the weekend, Mrs Thomas defeated Mrs Goodwin 5 up and 3 to play. BAY OF PLENTY LADIES , * ■v NEXT WEEK’S TOURNAMENT What promises to be the most outstanding Ladies’ Golf Tournament to be held in this district will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week (September 23, 24 and 25). It will take the form of the Bay of Plenty Open Championship, arid Handicap Tournament and will be played on the Whakatane links. « Tremendous interest centres on the event which has always attracted visitors from Wellington, Auckland, Gisborne, Rotorua, Hamilton, Te Puke and Tauranga. Record entries are anticipated and once again the splendid appointments and attractive surroundings of the course are the main draw. The Open Championship for which the first sixteen gross scores qualify carries with it the Bycroft Rose Bowl with subtrophies for the runner-up and the player presenting the best combined gross and nett scores in the qualifying rounds. The second sixteen will play for the Len Thompson Cup which figures for the Whakatane Handicap event and for which sub-trophies are likewise offered. Tl?e .eight players defeated in the first round will play off in a Flight on Handicap for which a further trophy is available.
All in all the event will furnish one of the finest and most representative ladies golfing displays seen on the links.
