HOTEL INCIDENT

ASSAULT AND DAMAGES I LABOURER CHARGED The sequel to a fracas in the bar of the Whakatane Hotel took place in the Whakatane Court on Saturday when Henry Briggs a labourer of Awakeri, appeared on a charge of assault and two of causing damage. A plea of guilty was entered. Accused had entered the bar and “thrown a glass at the barman, John , Armytage Grant. The glass missed Grant and smashed a bottle of wine and one of cordial besides several . glasses. The police were contacted and Constable McMath arrested accused, who was in an advanced stage of intoxication. Briggs was lodged in the Whakatane Gaol and while there smashed seven panes of glass in his anger.. On the assault charge Messrs. S. S. Shapley . and C. H. Christensen -Justices of the Peace, on the bench, convicted and fined accused £5. On the two charges of. damage he was ■ convicted and ordered to pay the amount, totalling £2 10s 6d within .seven days.

Briggs was ordered to take out a prohibition order.
