WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

GTAKIRI MEETING At the Otakiri Hall on September 3, the local Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting, Mrs Peck presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship and the members read in unison, the Aspirations. In response to the appeal, there was a good display of gifts for the monthly parcel to the Home Link in Yorkshire. Mrs A. McLean and Mrs K. Pryor were chosen to attend as delegates to the half-yearly meeting at Waiotahi. ? The secretary read a letter from the A.M.P. Society asking for ladies to attend their meeting. Mrs Cobden, Mrs Sandilands and Mrs Carr consented to attend. Mrs Peck then welcomed a large gathering of ladies from Edgecumbe, this being an exchange programme with a Sister W.I. Then followed a pleasant afternoon entertainment; piano solos by Mrs Good-win, a game “Pairs” linking Otakiri and Edgecumbe ladies; a competition and two delightful songs by Miss Fergusson. Elocution items by Mrs Watson caused, much laughter, and the programme ended with an amusing charade , “Misunderstood.”

There were large entries in all competitions, the successful ladies were:— Single flower: Miss Murray 1, Mrs Missen 2, Mrs McLean 3. Double flower: Miss Murray 1, Mrs Gibson 2, Mrs D. Campbell 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Cobden 1, Mrs Carr 2, Mrs Peck 3. Fair isle knitting: Mrs Cobden 1, Mrs Mackrell 2, Miss Murray 3. Brandy snaps: Mrs Peck 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Cristall 3.
