MAIZE GROWING
An appeal to the Minister of Agriculture to have a look at the price factor as far as maize was concerned—the bulk of which was grown in Poverty Bay and the Bay of Plenty—was made by Mr W. Sullivan (National, Bay o£ Plenty) during his Budget speech in the House of Representatives. “One cannot expect a farmer to turn over good grass pasture to grow' maize if he not going to get a satisfactory return for it,” he said. “We should have a look at the question of fencing wire and posts for subdividing paddocks for the growing of maize. Then, we will need something, to put on top of that maize crib to keep the weather out, and unless some type of roofing is available, we cannot keep up the production of maize either. All these things are related to the drive for aid to Britain, and the matter should be looked into. I appeal to the Minister of Agriculture to see that those essential things are made available to the maize growers.
