WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Hall on September 2. Mrs Barker presided and welcomed the visitors. Remits were read and discussed. The three delegates appointed to attend the meeting of the A. and P. Show were Mrs Comer, Mrs Ker and Mrs Larsen. Mrs Neil Martin and Mrs Patterson, Senr., were appointed delegates to the Council meeting at Waiotahi. Being the annual flower display the members exhibiting are to be congratulated on the outstanding quality of the blooms, which were greatly admired by all present. , After the general business was concluded Mrs Peck gave a demonstration of bouquet making which proved very interesting and was much appreciated. • The Roll Call, “Garden Problems” was well responded to and was ably answered by the gardening convener, Mrs Fennell. The bouquet made by Mrs Peck was won by Mrs Haverbier, the proceeds going to the Food for Britain fund. Competitions resulted: — Posy: Mrs Moran 1, Mrs Hanham 2.

Collection of vegetables: Mrs Shaw 1, Mrs Hannah 2.

Collection 6 Iceland Poppies: Mrs Teasdale. 5 Collection 6 Freesias: Mrs Coburn. Collection 6 Calendulas: Mrs Hannah. Bowl Violas: Mrs Fennell. Best Variety Spring Flowers: Mrs Cantrell.

Decorated Egg Cup: Mrs Hannah. Vase of Flowers for Effect; Mrs Shaw. Best Pot Plant: Mrs Patterson Senr. Three Lemons: Mrs Hanham. Three Poorman’s Orange: Mrs Cantrell.

Three Hen Eggs: Mrs Cantrell. Best Collection Vegetables: Mrs Shaw.

The Whakatane W.I. gardening circle held its monthly meeting at Mrs Neil Martin’s residence, Mrs Fennell presiding. Apologies were received from Mesdames Dixon, Benett and Hellawell. The floral display for the September meeting was discussed. The monthly reading on herbaceous borders and leaf curl was read by all. A competition, “National Emblems” was won by Mrs Patterson Senr. Mrs Fennell demonstrated the spraying of fruit trees. Competitions resulted:— Best Daffodil: Mrs Hannah.

Best Bowl Spring Bulbs: Mrs S Armstrong. Herbs: Mrs Fennell.
