HOCKEY MEN’S COMPETITION FINAL Last weekend Whakatane and Edgecumbe Rangers met in the final for the men’s competition of the Whakatane County Hockey Association. The game was won by the Rangers by 4 goals to 2, the Rangers thus winning the Bridgers Shield for the 1947 season.
The game was fast and open from start to finish and the Rangers consisting mainly of first year players more than held their own against an older and experienced team. Although several attacks broke down through lack of experience and over enthusiasm of the Ranger forwards they gave the Whakatane defence no rest and this was one of the deciding factors in the finai stages of the game. Play commenced with the Rangers swinging into attack and a centre from T. Blair was smartly picked up by I. Jensen who made no mistake and opened the score for Rangers. immediately put on the pace and a hard shot from P. Hammond was nicely stopped and cleared by T. Eagleson. Play then travelled from one end of the field to the other both goalies been called on„to saye and some good hockey played in the field. Many promising Ranger attacks were cleverly stopped by Mokomoko and M. Jensen was always a worry to the Whakatane forwards. Half time came with the score still, Rangers I, Whakatane 0. Play recommenced and with Whakatane attacking Hammond with the ball under control weaved his way past three men and completed the movement with a shot' that didn’t gave' the goalie a chance. A few minutes later a penalty bully for an infringement in the Rangers circle resulted in a penalty goal for Whakatane bringing the score to Rangers 1, Whakatane 2. Immediately play livened up and J. Jordon, the Rangers fullback, leaving the defence to the other fullback and goalie moved up field and pressed his forwards into attack. This proved the turning point of the game. With the extra support of the backs the forwards went into action and from an attack on , the' right Ellis with nice stick work changed direction catching the defence off balance and netting the equaliser for Rangers. The next few minutes found Ellis in the circle again after receiving a well placed hit from A. Crooks and after a short tussle with the Whakatane fullback Ellis slipped the ball past the goalie bringing a roar of appreciation from the Edgecumbe supporters. Scores, Rangers 3, Whakatane 2.
B. Crawford then changed his attack to the left wing where B. Jqhnson ’made several fast runs but apparently his game was respected by the Rangers as K. Colebrook was always in a handy position when the ball arrived and stopped any chance of a good centering shot. With time nearly up, Jespersen hit to Ferguson who raced up the wing and a nice centre was picked up by B. Graham who followed the ball right through into the goal. Rangers 4, Whakatane 2.
The game was ably controlled by B. Henderson and N. Dawson. The Whakatane ladies catered for the visiting team after the game and the Rangers captain expressed the team’s appreciation to both the ladies for the refreshments and to the men for the game. Te Teko A ladies defeated Poroporo by 2 goals to 1. This game was played before the men’s game and made Te Teko the winners of the competition for this season. Both teams were feeling the strain of the game the day before when Poroporo defeated Te Teko by 1 goal to nil. However some good hockey was seen and the game was very evenly contested. Poroporo. showed slightly more combination than Te Teko and were pressing hard towards the end of the game, but Te Teko’s defence held out. K. Hunia netted twice for Te Teko and M. Mason scored for Poroporo.
