Dear Sir
Letters to the Editor must be clearly written on one side of the paper only and where a nom-de-piume is used the name of the writer must be included for reference purposes. The Editor reserves the right to abridge, amend or withhold any letter or letters. RUGBY SELECTION . Sir, —As I intimated in my previous letter the assertions contained in it were only a reflection of pubflic opinion and not “inspired by an acute sense of youthful frustration” to coin a phrase from your other correspondents, on this subject.
Before the selectors wear themselves out patting each other on the back it would be well for them to bear in mind the fact that Rugby followers throughout the Bay of Plenty expected the Whakatane subUnion to win the Te Hurinui-Apanui Shield. There is very little doubt that the material was here with which to work on and that it only needed selecting and coaching correctly to produce' the required results. It must cause the selectors great satisfaction to be able to pick a team that can win or nearly so when nothing depends on the results. The impressive array of points which are tabled in their letter are excellent, all the three gentlemen seem to lack is the practical application of their theories. Furthermore the attendance on Saturday was a reflection of public opinion on the perpetrators of the local team.
In conclusion I must say that the bouquets handed out by outsiders will in no way affect the result of next year’s ballot for selectors. Yours etc., A, MARTIN.
