MUSIC COMPETITIONS
HAMILTON FESTIVAL Two junior members of the Whakatane Caledonian Band are leaving today for Hamilton to take part in the 1947 Hamilton Musical Festival and Competitions. They are Messrs. Russell Hurst and Don McKenzie. The two boys will be up against some very good competitors as they are playing in classes B and C as' well as in the under 17 and under 19 sections. In the B class they will be up against some of the best pipers in New Zealand. Russell Hurst won the Craigellachie Shield for pipers by a very narrow margin from Don McKenzie last New Year’s Day at Qhope and the progress the boys make will be closely followed by well wishers in the district.
One man who will ‘take a particularly close interest is their tutor, the Rev. H. M. Bell, who has spent a great deal of time and effort in coaching the boys. It is interesting, to note that from Whakatane members of the Boys’ Band, Pipe Band, two Highland Dancers and several child pianists have gone forward to these competitions; no mean effort for a town of this size.
The best wishes of the community are extended to all competitors.
