Taneatua School Roll An interesting feature associated with the Taneatua School Jubilee last Monday was shown by the fact that the first school roll in 1897 numbered 27 pupils against 143 to’day under the headmaster Mr C. R. Oliver. The intervening years however have produced nearly 2000 names of boys and girls who have been handled at the school over the fifty-three years between the dates. Broken Beer Bottles “Cannot something be done about the number of broken beer bottles on the road way?” asked Cr Leslie at the County Council meeting yesterday. He added that he had travelled extensively recently and the number of bottles on the roadway was astounding. Cr Wardlaw opined that the only way was to charge a shilling per bottle from the hotel refundable when returned. Boxing Notes October 13 has been fixed as the date of the next boxing tournament for Whakatane. It is understood that attempts are being made to arrange a bout between Vic. Gummer (Auckland) and C. Woods (Hamilton). These boys met in the Auckland championships in a contest described by critics as being worthy of a New Zealand final. It was one of the best bouts seen for a long time and earned unstinted praise. The idea of this is that the local Association imports talent and with this in view efforts are being made to obtain A. Whittle who won the junior Welter-weight championship and Neville Hastings to fight at the next Whakatane tournament.
