“A giant Sequoia tree in the United States, known to be 6000 years old, could supply sufficient timber to house the Queen Mary, or build 300 bungalows,” said Mr H. J. Duigan, president of the Wanganui Acclimatisation Society, in an address to the Wanganui Junior Chamber of Commerce. “A project of largescale afforestation is imperative in the national interest, as trees are necessary in our lives as well as being a permanent feature. Everyone should be interested in such an asset,” he said.
