GUIDES AND BROWNIES

SECOND BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED GATHERING AT AWAKERI The birthday celebrations of the Awakeri Guide Company and Brownie Pack was held in the Awakeri Hall last Wednesday afternoon and was very well attended by the girls and their parents. After apologies had been received, the visiting Guiders and friends were welcomed by Mrs Cooper (on behalf of the Guide Committee) who wished one and all a happy birthday. The programme opened with “The Fairy Queen” with Lesley Goodwin as ‘Queen’. Jill Caldwell as a ‘Beacon Reporter.’ Other Brownies were ‘Elves and Gnomes’ and all performed very creditably. Then followed games by all present and a treasure hunt for the Guides which was won by Anne Roberts.

Afternoon tea was served and was followed by the cutting of the cake kindly made and decorated in the Awakeri colours by Mrs Graham. It was cut by the youngest Brownie and oldest Guide—Ruth Hollay and Jeanette Mcdonald.

Mr Anderson, on behalf of the Guide Company, spoke to the girls and thanked Miss Cain and Miss Woolfield for all the interest and time they had given to the training of the units. His remarks were endorsed by Mrs E. Haultain on behalf of the parents. Miss Cain suitably replied for Miss Woolfield and herself.

Posies were presented to Mrs Radcliqe (Edgecumbe), Miss Watson (Whakatane), Mrs Graham and Misses Cain and Woolfield.

The most important item of the afternoon was the ceremony of enrolling several new Brownies: Ruth Hollay, Beryl Webby, Pat Webby, and Keith Wilson and the investing of a Guide, Anne Roberts. Mrs Radcliffe and Miss Watson performed the ceremony and presented the girls with service stars and badges they had won.
