SPECTACULAR FIRE

ENGINE SHED DESTROYED OUTBREAK AT TANEATUA ‘ & One of the most spectacular fires seen in Taneatua took place on Tuesday night when with the express engine and tender safely housed inside, the large N.Z. Railways shed took fire and was completely destroyed. The fire which was first noticed by the stationmaster, Mr L. Williams, started in the roofing immediately above the engine and spread rapidly down the timbering to the weather-boards. Mr Williams sounded the engine whistle to attract attention but later was forced to retire in the face of the flames. Although a large number of residents gathered it was impossible to do anything to check the flames and with only one small hose in operation and in the absence of a local brigade. It was only possible to save several small huts in the vicinity.

The fire, ignited a timber stack and an oil storage shed both of which were destroyed. The locomotive which stood in the shed as it was burnt to the ground became superheated so that the boilers gathered full steam and the glass windows in the cab folded outwards. It will require an extensive overhaul before it will* be serviceable.
