BOROUGH EXPANSION

inevitable growth of the Borough of Whakatane has given rise to concern and speculation. The Borough Council has long been alive to the position which must be faced during the next decade when the town will have extended over most of its available building sites. Eyes .have turned in various directions in search of possible extensions, and the most recent suggestion concerns the bridging of the upper harbour and the settling of that large area, well above flood level which lies opposite the business section. Why not an oceanside suburb for "Whakatane? Already the Paper Mills to which so many workers are transported daily entail a i five-mile trip when*in reality they are less than one mile in a direct line. The scheme has much to commend it and should be' given serious consideration. As a residential area it would be attractive and much closer than the existing sections .of suburban Whakatane while it would also open up waste land which is now little more than an eyesore.

Where There’s a Will! The football match, Auckland v Otago which was played at Dunedin on Wednesday was followed on the radio by fans all over the Dominion. One boy in a Whakatane store made a special trip home to collect the family radio which did yeoman service in bringing the match to a crowd of shop workers who would have otherwise missed it. Another enterprising but not so energetic youth borrowed a radio from a dealer a few doors away. With the aid of a roll of aerial wire from the same source which was lead through the window and draped on the roof of an outbuilding an excellent reception was enjoyed by another half dozen followers.

Winter Mushrooms Evidence that the winter months have not been as cold as some people might have thought, is proved by the fact that residents living near Te Awamutu have had mushrooms growing on their property during the months of June, July and August. The delicacies were well-grown and of good size. Gift For Germans A cheque for £4OO has been sent to the Rev. J. A. Paech, Lutheran minister in Wellington, by a Wellington woman, for the relief of Christians in Germany. The donation was made following Mr Owen Davies’ broadcast on conditions in Germany after serving. there as an Unrra relief officer.
