Never Heard Of Them
Until he went to Hastings recently to buy a shirt and working trousers, an old station hand from a remote inland district had not encountered rationing. After the goods had been wrapped, the man passed over the required money and was non-pluss-ed when the shophand asked for coupons. He had no ration book and professed he had never heard of such things. The man had always drawn his rations from the station cook-house, killed his own meat and bought butter from a farmer. He had not attempted to purchase new clothes in five years.
