THE SPORTING WORLD

RUGBY FOOTBALL

THE GAMES

SATURDAY’S PLAY OPOTIKI TAKES PARATA CUP Conditions at the domain on Saturday were not very good. Recent rain had left a large muddy puddle on No. 2 ground while No. 1 field also boasted a smaller patch. Several players fell victims to these treacherous spots and looked anything but comfortable after their experiences. There was a very small number of spectators. The fixtures were: Junior Possibles v Probables, Opotiki v Whakatane for the Parata Cup (third grade) and one senior match, P.W.D. v Wairaka.

OPOTIKI 3, WHAKATANE 0 The final in the Parata Cup series saw a hard battle between Opotiki and Whakatane third grade teams. Opotiki appeared to have the better' team and play was for the most part in Whakatane territory. A number of last minute saves by the home team kept the winners margin down to the bare three points. The only try of the game was scored after halftime by Nolan Ross for Opotiki and the kick missed. Mr Mahy was referee. POSSIBLES 26, PROBABLES 3 The A. and B. trial game in preparation for the Shalfoon Shield match on August 30 was hard but could not have been described as really good football. The half-time score was Possibles 11, Probables 3.

The game became faster in the secon half with the possibles looking more like a team. The probables could not hold them back and they went on to more than double their score. '

For the possibles scorers' were G. Goodall, D. Tawa, T. Patterson, Addison and Skelton. Kicks were put over by M. Tiepa (2), J. Laffer ty and Howat (2). For probables Carling scored a penalty. Mr Palmer was referee. WAIRAKA 28, P.W.D. 6. A very much improved P.W.D. team took the field. It is some time since this team has played at the Domain and their greatly improved form was the subject of a large’ amount of discussion on the sideline. H. Tawira particularly struck the onlooker with his dodging tactics which on several occasions gained ground for the red team. P.W.D. took the initiative from the kick off and carried., the' play into yellow territory. •A. series of fast moves overwhelmed the yellow team and Kohu dived over to score. The kick missed.

P.W.D. 3, Wairaka 0.

Wairaka followed up fast from the kick off and the P.W.D. defence held, but only for a time. From an opening by Riini Hudson scored. J. Lafferty converted. ; Wairaka 5, P.W.D.- 3.

The game continued at a hard pace with the yellow back line figuring in many moves. Wairaka kept play in red territory and gradually forced their opponents back. Lafferty forced half way between the goal and side lines. The kick missed. Wairaka 8, P.W.D. 3.

Yellow again figured in the attack and Rip Crapp .scored. Again the kick missed. Wairaka 11, P.W.D. 3.

H. Tawira was regarded as an optimist when he decided to have a shot from a penalty on the Wairaka--25, just in from the sideline. It was an excellent kick and added three points to P.W.D. score. Wairaka 11, P.W.D. 6.

* • . A lucky escape from injury was experienced by Tina Riini. Following up fast after a dribbling rush he w r ent for the ball and hit the P.W.D. goal posts. He got the try but looked far from right. He received medical attention and played on. The try ' was converted by H. Bluett. Wairaka 16, P.W.D. 6. Wairaka forced their way through again and K. Merito forced. ' Rip Crapp converted. Wairaka 21, P.W.D. 6. Wairaka was forced to play one man short when a player was ordered off for an alleged leg; trip. This did not stop them from scoring again. R. Crapp scored and T. Crapp converted. The full time score was: Wairaka 26, P.W.D. 6. Mr Oswald was referee.
