BASKETBALL SATURDAY’S TOURNAMENT “FASTEST GAME ON FOOT” The indoor basketball tournament to be held in the Winter Show Buildings on Saturday night should provide a really enjoyable and exciting evening’s sport. Teams from Tauranga and Gisborne are attending and the standard of play should be extremely high. Play will commence sharp at 6.30 p.m. and spectators are advised to be early so as not to miss any of the tournament. The Game

Indoor basketball-differs from the outdoor variety to a great extent. It is very much faster and the rules are entirely different. The game was introduced by a professor at a United States college to provide students with an indoor sport during the winter. So popular did the game become that it swept America and extended to other countries. The recent war did much to further the sport in New Zealand and many players had their first experience of the game in the services where it constituted a major part of their physical training.

It rapidly gained popularity and after the war associations similar to Whakatane sprang up all over the country. In New Plymouth indoor basketball has as firm a footing as any other sport.

Teams consist of six players and because of the very fast pace at which the game is played there are two short periods of play with an interval between.

For the spectator the game has a large amount of appeal. As there are only twelve players it is easily followed and from the same fact comes the great speed at which it is played. “The fastest game on foot” is no idle claim.

To those who have never seen the game played the tournament can, be readily recommended as an education while to followers the standard of play of all teams competing can be given as an, indication that the tournament will be well worth seeing.
