SERIOUS POSITION
LEFT WITHOUT SURGEON RECENT INCIDENT The fact that the Whakatane Hospital had been left without the services of a surgeon for a period was made known at the hospital board meeting on Thursday. Dr. Dawson had become sick and Dr. Cole, who relieved on such occasions, had also been called away. The nearest surgeon)had been at Opotiki. Position Filled Exhaustive enquiries had been made as far afield as Hamilton and Auckland and had finally resulted in Dr. R. Nicks who had recently returned from England interrupting his holiday at Rotoiti to help out. Dr. Nicks had taken over after accommodation had been found for himself and his wife and was doing good work, How desperate the position had become was instanced by the fact that the superintendent of the Opotiki hospital had been called on at midnight to perform a serious operation at Whakatane. A motion that the board’s thanks be conveyed to Dr. Nicks for his help and that the chairman be thanked for his action in contacting Dr. Nicks was carried.
