RACING NEWS & VIEWS

A Good Stakes Winner Surpeen, now an 11 year old has won in stakes the very creditable sum for a jumper of £8545, which amount may be increased at the National Carnival which does not conclude until August 16. The Leading Jockeys For the 1946-47 season W. J. Broughton heads the list of successful riders with 75 wins, N. B. Holland being second with 38, followed by J. Campbell 36, and C. A. Bowry and N. Ireland 35 each.

Gavinmor At Te Rapa The Auckland owned Gavinmor has been transferred from Takanini to Te Rapa and has joined A. Winder’s big team.

A Big Plunge The victory of the New Zealander, Immediate, in the Welter Handicap at Brisbane last week meant a very fine win for his connections for the Betting Ring paid out over £20,000 over the result, a most decisive win.

Investments Loom Large In the early betting for Australia’s big Cups, the Melbourne and Caulfield, Bruce and St. Roache have been backed to win £SOOO. It would thus appear that Bruce is certain to make the trip. A Good Start

W. J. Broughton has made a good start in the new racing season, for on the first day of the National meeting he rode Beechwood and Soneri to victory.

A Day Comet Winner The breeding of Fairyhouse, run-ner-up of the Enfield Steeplechase at Riccarton, will be of interest to the sportsmen of this district. He is an 11 year old chestnut gelding by Day Comet—Fairness, and like many of the family is a really accomplished jumper.

Pakuranga Hunt Club For the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting Chung Chong and Cambria 9.3 are at the top of the handicap. In the Hunt Club Cteeplachase Good Armour 11.7 is in pride of place.

Cup Winner Lame After being cooled down at Riccarton, the winner of the Winter Cup, Soneri, was decidedly lame. It is reported that the trouble is tendon weakness, so it may be some months" before the Bulandshar mare is able to race again.

He Was Fast Enough In* summing up the Grand National Steeplechase prospects a southern writer ventured the opinion that Surpeen would lack the pace of his rivals. In the race, however, on a fast course, he led by several lengths for fully three miles and on the day was quite the speediest galloper of the field.

A Good Year' Over its last year’s operations the Auckland Racing Club registered a profit of £46,375, hence the reason for increasing the Auckland Cup prize money to over £IO,OOO.

Speedy Candidates Among the classy three year olds at Takanini that are executing speedy gallops are Pelias, Niloch, Angeline and Beaute and they are confidently expected to race prominently in Spring events.
