DESPERATE POSITION
LOCAL HOUSING SHORTAGE STATEMENT BY MAYOR - “The position is really desperate,” said His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) when discussing the housing shortage in Whakatane at the meeting of the Borough Council last Monday evening. “I have had dozens of people in to see what I can do about it. One woman told me frankly that there was only one thing for her to do, and that was to put her two children in a home and with her husband fend for herself. There are numerous cases of people living anywhere—families living in one room, rented from relations. We have definitely got a bad problem here.”
