Building Permits In Borough During the past month building permits have been issued within the Borough as follows: Residences, additions 2; washhouse 1; sheds 4; garage 1; shed removal, temporary dwelling 1. The value for the above was £2497.
Hospitality Appreciated A short letter of appreciation of the hospitality extended him on the occasion of his recent visit to the town, was received by His Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry recently from Mr A. R. Cutler, V.C.," High Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Australia.
Famine Emergency Campaign Rationing coupons surrendered at the Post Office, Whakatane, for the period 4th-9th August, 1947, were as under: Meat, £2 18s sd; tea, nil; butter, nil; sugar, nil; fats, nil. Total collections to date are now: Sugar, 231bs; tea, 18albs; butter, 2661b5; meat,£ 251 15s 6d.
Traffic Control
The Borough Council has drawn the attention of the Traffic Inspector to the question of' double-banking by cyclists within the Borough and also decided to draw the attention of the school committee to the pedestrian crossing in front of the Primary School,. urging that a school patrol be established there. A Splendid Response As a result of the appeal conducted recently in the interests of the Galway Guild for the purpose of meeting the costs of sending parcels to Britain, Whakatane raised £24 2s 6d. The sum includes several private donations which are hereby acknowledged by the orgainser Mrs Moran, with thanks.
Tribute To Tate Chairman
“I would like to pay a tribute to the interest in the Domain over a very long period by the late chairman, Mr G. Brabant,” said Mr C. A. Suckling addressing the Borough Council last Monday evening. “The public of this town should feel deeply indebted for the wonderful work which he has done over the years.”
Labour Shortage Indicating the acute shortage of labour in Whakatane, Mr I. Hubbard, when speaking of the operations of the old Domain Board of which he was secretary, said -that even though they offered very attractive wages it was quite impossible to get a man even to cut the lawns on the domain. Additional Air Service An additional air service by Dakota between Dunedin and Christchurch has been announced by the New Zealand National Airways’ Corporation. Beginning on September 1, an aircraft will, leave Christchurch at 12.40 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and at 9.15 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The departure time from Dunedin will be 2.35 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 11.5 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The average time for the flight will be approximately one and a-half hours.
