WHAKATANE HARBOUR

JULY MEETING OF BOARD BUSINESSMEN’S REPRESENTATIONS The quarterly meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board took place last week. Present Messrs. W. R. Boon (chairman), J. A. Mitchell, A. L. Richardson, C. T. Smith, C. McKenzie, W. Hunter, H. G. Warren, H. W. Brabant and R. Ruddick. The secretary (Mr C. G. Lucas) and consulting engineer (Mr C. H. Brebner) were also in attendance. The Whakatane Chamber of Commerce wrote pointing out that the portion of Quay Street from Bridgers Warehouse to the Bridge had now been curbed and channelled and that the whole area would be improved immeasurably by general levelling, and the provision of suitable seats. The Board was asked to give consideration to the improvement of the area as Suggested. It was decided that application he referred to the Consulting Engineer for report. The same body also stated that at a recent meeting the dust nuisance from the road at the rear of business premises on the Western side of the Strand was discussed. Retailers pointed out that in the summer months it was necessary to have the back of most of the premises open for ventilation purposes and there was a consequent considerable dust nuisance from the road. Would the Board give consideration to the matter of sealing the road to overcome the nuisance referred 'to.

The application was referred to the Consulting Engineer for report. The Chamber to be asked what action it could take to have back premises and fences etc. cleaned and tidied up and to ensure that lessees, sub-lessees and tenants would refrain from the burning of rubbish except on the mud flats when the tide was out. Matata Representation

The chairman reported his attendance at Manawahe and Matata in connection with the Whakatane County Council’s proposal that the Tauranga Harbour Board district be amended by the deletion of the Matata Riding from such Board’s district and the inclusion of the Matata Riding of the County of Whakatane in the Whakatane Harbour Board’s district. By such meetings the following resolutions were carried:— In Manawahe: “That a vote be taken on this important matter at the next election.” In Matata: .“That a ballot be taken at the time of the November elections in order to decide whether the Matata Riding of the County of Whakatane will be transferred from the Tauranga Harbour District to the Whakatane Harbour District or not.” The report was received. Rat Week Campaign

The Borough Council advised that it proposed to conduct a Rat Week campaign during the first week in August and it would be appreciated if the Board would co-operate. The foreshore in Quay Street at the rear of the shop premises was inhabited with its fair share of the pests and it would be of considerable assistance if the Board could provide a man to accompany the Health Inspector in the laying of baits in this area.

The secretary reported that the Town Clerk, had agreed that there would be insufficient work for two men for a week but that one man could be kept fully employed. In the circumstances on the Board’s behalf, it had been agreed to pay half the cost of the Borough man for one week. The secretary’s action was confirmed. Dance Hall at Heads After some discussion it was decided that Mr Sullivan, M.P., be asked to enquire whether special legislation could be enacted to permit of the Board leasing an area past the signal station at a nominal rental with an improvement clause, as ■ a Kiosk Dance Hall and that the chairman with Messrs. Brabant and Warren, consulting engineer and secretary • be a committee to mark out the site.

The secretary reminded the meeting that the following resolution was still on the minutes from last year: “That the chairman, Mr Warren and the Consulting Engineer be a committee to have the groyne wall opposite the swimming pool repaired, the understanding being that the cost of such repairs will not exceed £loo—that on the basis of one-third to the Borough Council and twothirds to the Harbour Board this board is prepared to refund to the Borough Council up to £IOO of the Borough Council’s expenditure on the Heads Swimming Pool deepening.” The matter was referred to the committee for action.
