OHOPE MATTERS

PROGRESS LEAGUE INTERESTS REPRESENTATIONS TO COUNTY Writing the Whakatahe County Council last week, the Ohope Progress League brought the following matters to its notice:—

1. Clearing of right of ways from roadway to beach. These are all overgrown with lupin and scrub and residents and visitors at present have no means of gaining alecess to the beach save through private property.

2. Present conditions of private property and drainage of same. The Council at considerable expense recently formed and surfaced a footpath which is absolutely unusable save in prolonged dry weather, and in wet weather merely acts as a drain for the whole of the hillside and roadway. The footpath slopes away from the road with the result that in several areas all drainage runs into private properties causing unnecessary inconvenience, and is in time likely to cause damage to house foundations. Both, the road and footpath could with small expenditure be graded and drained so that all difficulties would be obviated. (Recommended that Works Committee visits the Ohope Beach during the next period of wet weather).

3. The possibility of oiling the roadway in order to keep down the dust menace during the summer months. This has been done on. a small scale by Mr R. Marryatt' and has proved both economical and successful.

4. Rubbish Collection. The League is at a loss to understand the figures quoted in the Council’s letter. The original request was for a monthly collection of rubbish which would necessitate the use of a truck and driver and one helper one day a month. With regard to the dump, the League considers there are sufficient areas in the Riding where refuse could be dumped without necessitating the purchase of a section, or failing that suitable arrangements could be made with the Whakatane Borough Council to make use of their dump. The Council decided that the letter be referred to Cr McCready and the County Engineer for report.
