James, who was a cowhand himself, wrote the thrilling tale from out of the rough-and-tumble West of cattle stampedes and gun-toting buckaroos he had known all his life. First printed in 1926, the book that tells a story of the West of today in the spirit of the West of- old has been published in 32 separate editions.
In the. film, Mac Murray is seen as Clint Barkley, the hard-hitting, danger-loving cowpuncher. Anne Baxter appears as the trim, roman-tic-minded ranch boss, while Burl Ives, the famous American ballad singer, plays the “puncher” who weaves his spell about desert .campfires.
Others in the outstanding cast of more than 100 players include Bruce Cabot, Esther Dale, Roy Roberts and J. Farrell MacDonald.
