SHY AND RETIRING

WHAKATANE OVER-MODEST SCENIC GRANDEUR OVERLOOKED “In Whakatane, I think you must be very shy and retiring,” said Mr A. R. Cutler, Trade Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Australia at the complimentary luncheon tendered him last Monday. “I am referring to the fact that at Rotorua, you have a thermal centre to which all visitors are taken, almost as soon as they come here. Now in and around this town of yours, I feel that you have attractions equally as good. You have the marvellous beauty of the coastal road, and the expansive views from Hillcrest. They are exceedingly beautiful and surely are a tourist attraction on their own. When you have improved your roads a little you would be well advised to publicise them and bring visitors to this very beautiful part of your country.”
