RACING NEWS & VIEWS

Spirillum Fancied Following his dashing display in the Mount Albert Steeples Spirillum is now widely fancied for the Grand National Hurdles. He is . just the type to succeed in such a race as he is big and jumps with little effort, while his trainer, Hector Gray, won the race three years ago with The Dozer, so is fully conversant with the preparation required for a National winner. Made a Recovery It would appear that. Page’s Raid has made a recovery from the effects of the heavy fall he sustained at Ellerslie in June, for at the Trenthem meeting he accounted for the Pareora Hunters’ Plate, of a mile and a quarter in 2min 15secs with lOst. This Night Raid jumper is again coming into favour for the Grand National Steepechase.

Improving The Foxbridge mare, Our Bridge, ran her best race for many months, when she finished second in the President’s Handicap at Avondale to Bedivere. Evidently she is better in the heavy going with a slower pace than on speedy tracks.

The Winter Cup

The leading favourites for the Canterbury Winter Cup are Howe, Soneri and Theocritus. They are reported to be working freely on the tracks.

Sale of Gay Fault The Defaulter—Gaysome mare, Gay Fault, has been purchased by Mr N. J. Moodabe, of Auckland, at 900 gineas. This season she has registered two wins in 14 starts, but is not big enough to carry weight. She may not therefore be able to emulate the performances of Kentucky and Whackie, raced successfully by this owner. Change of Location Mr R. H. Meynell, of Taumarunui, is transferring his team to Hawera where he has secured a suitable property. His horses will still compete at South Auckland fixtures. Sold at 550 Guineas r\ The Dink—Cradle Song gelding, Dileas, a’ Thompson Handicap w%£ ner, will now race in Canterbury,, having been purchased by Mr J. PV O’Brien, of-Christchurch.-
