BROADCASTING
STUDIOS FOR DISTRICT STATIONS AT ROTORUA AND TAURANGA Ratlio listeners in the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty district will not for much longer have to endure what is almost the worst reception in New Zealand.
If the Rotorua Borough Council, at its meeting gives its authority, the construction of a temporary wooden broadcasting studio on a vacant section at the corner of Arawa and Fenton Streets will be begun almost immediately by the Public Works Department. Broadcasting for both Tauranga and Rotorua was promised in the recently presented ten-year plan for the district, but the shortage of building materials is likely’to delay the building of permanent stations for some years. In view of the desperate need for improved radio services in the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty axea, the Government has decided to instal temporary stations.
The first of these will be at Rotorua, but the transmitter, which will also serve a Tauranga station, will probably be located at Te Puke to give the best coverage of the large district between Rotorua and the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
The resident architect of the Public Works Department at Hamilton, Mr F. J. Anderson, has submitted plans of the proposed temporary studio to the Rotorua Borough Council. The building was formerly a services establishment and has been obtained through the War Assets Realisation Board. It is a single-storied wooden building. The plans provide for its conversion into an up-to-date studio with control room, sound-proof studio and record library.
