SCHOOL COMMITTEE

JULY MEETING PEDESTRIAN CROSSING QUESTION The Whakatane District High School Committee, held its monthly meeting at the High School last week. Present: Messrs. J. W. Wilson (chair), G. H. Dainton, F. A. S. Clarke, G. E. Mahy, H. D. Paterson, W. E. Armstrong and J. H. Duthie (secretary). Accounts Accounts totalling £lB was passed for payment. The chairman stated that on account of an alteration in the departmental method q'f paying committees’ allowances funds would be rather limited for the next few weeks. School Funds The chairman reported on the competition to assist school funds which had been organised by the committee. A net profit of £l4 had resulted. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of thanks to Mr C. L. Jordan, of the Monte Carlo milk bar who had generously donated several prizes. Cleaning

It was reported that the services of a full-time caretaker with his wife as assistant had been secured and that the new appointees would commence duty at an early date. Visiting Committee Messrs. W. E. Armstrong and F. W. Lysaght were re-appointed visiting committee for August. Letter in Beacon A letter which appeared in a recent issue of the Beacon regarding the pedestrian crossing in Domain Road, opposite the Primary School, was discussed at length. It was pointed out that the committee as such had nothing to do with the institution of a school traffic patrol. Such a patrol must be sponsored by the school authorities.

A very careful watch will be kept by members of the teaching staff on the crossing in future and if it is considered advisable, the question of a school patrol will be at once investigated
