DANGER TO CATTLE

WARNING FROM MATAMATA A warning regarding the danger to stock through hemlock poisoning was given at a meeting of the Matamata County Council. The inspector stated that the weed was obtaining a hold and that one farmer, who had grubbed 35 bags of hemlock roots,, now attributed the, loss of ten dairy cows to this weed and not to ragwort. Hemlock was like carrot foliage in its early stages and was most dangerous when the plant had wilted after cutting. It was stated that sodium chlorate was not efficacious in killing the weed, and that deep grubbing and burning was the best method of eradicating it.
