EIGHTH CENTENARY
LISBON SPENDING £125,000 Ceelbrations of the eighth centenary of the conquest of Lisbon, Portugal, are costing the City Council £125,000, according to Reuters’ correspondent in Lisbon. Starting with a mock battle in the castle of St. George—scene of decisive fighting leading to the capture of the city by Alfonso I, in 1147—the celebrations will last until next October.
At midnight of the opening day, a huge cross was lit up on the castle ramparts as church bells pealed and massed bands marched through the city playing Lisbon’s own march.
