INTERSCHOOL GAMES

HXJGBY AND BASKETBALL BAY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS Football and basketball teams from the Whakatane District High School last week journeyed to Tauranga, the boys to play the annual matches against Tauranga College, and the girls to participate in the annual basketball tournament between teams from Tauranga College and Katikati, Te Puke and Whakatane District High Schools. The day was fine, and some very good games resulted. ■

BUg r)y Whakatane’s second fifteen found itself against decidedly taller and heavier opponents, and playing its first match did well to keep the score down to 6—3. Early in the first spell J. Prince kicked a penalty goal for Whakaiane, and in the sec-* end Tauranga scored two tries, neither of which was converted. The first ‘ fifteens were more evenly matched in size, and an indication of the closeness of the game was that there was no score at halftime. Whakaiane had a territorial advantage in the first spell, but with insufficient accuracy in their passing movements could not penetrate the defence, though two attempts at field goals narrowly missed'. In the second half the Tauranga backs were more aggressive, and handling with precision scored two tries, while five minutes before time B. White scored in-the corner for Whakatane. The ’Whakatane forwards played well, and in the backs K. Carter frequently saved well and gained anything up to 25 yards for his side by sound kicking. Basketball The following are the results of the basketball matches played by the Whakatane teams:— A Grade, against Tauranga 17—jL8; Te Puke 21—9; Katikati 20—2. B Grade, against Tauranga 14—17; : Te Puke 21—11; Katikati 16—6. | C Grade, against Tauranga 15—21; I Te Puke 16—4; Katikati 24—4. J (Whakatane scores first in each case). * The A game Tauranga v. Whakatane was a particularly fine one, and Tauranga spectators remarked that no better 1 game had been seen on the courts for a long time. The Whakatane players had a better combination, and were unlucky to lose.
