NOT SUCH A BAD OLD WORLD!

Readers are invited to subscribe genuine stories of their own experience, or knowledge which illustrate kindliness in commonplace things, and which tend to restore faith in human nature in a world where selfishness is an acknowledged feature. For each story accepted and published the sum of 5/- will be paid to the writer.

“I would like to tell you about one of the many occasions when I thought this was not such a bad old world. It happened many years ago, in fact nearly twenty. I had one very small son, at the time, 13 months old and a daughter expected any day. It was Xmas Eve, and my husband gave me a wonderful Xmas present. He said to pack up as he had a new job and “chucked” the old one. Well

there was nothing for it but to go. We went to a place called “Klondyke” and was I miserable that Xmas morning. Dumped into one corner of a huge rambling house (don’t ask me where it is, probably has 4 or 5 families in it now). It was about 11 a.m. when the wonderful thing happened. A man, a complete stranger, rode up to the back door and wished me a “Happy Xmas” and gave me several parcels from his sister, whom I did not know. I was very surprised and embarrassed but he quickly disappeared. When I opened the parcels, I found a cooked tur-

key, a ham, Xmas pudding, green peas (shelled), new pota- , toes, and every thing that usually goes with a Xmas dinner. A small note was enclosed hoping I would accept the gift as the lady knew I would nut feel like cooking. All I had to do was cook the vegetables. Was I pleased. The strange thing was, I never did meet the sender as I had several miles to walk with two children. Yes, I gave a Xmas present too that Xmas day, a b4by daughter. I have forgotten the ladies name, but never will I forget the kind deed. . R.A., Ohope.
