WAIMANA NEWS

.INTERESTING DRAMA EVENING WIDE PUBLIC INTEREST .A most successful Drama evening was held in the Waimana Hall recently by members of the Waimana Women’s Institute Drama Circle. The producer was Mrs Rose-anne Rutherford, and great credit is due to her for the splendid way in which the three one-act plays and a sketch were presented. There. was--,.|ii excellent attendance of supporters, although the ' weather was far from the best, heavy rain falling all the evening. Selected music was played by the Waimana orchestra between plays. The stage, managers for the evening were Mr Forde Mitchell and Mr Roland White. The characters of the first play, “Novelette” by Philip Johnson, were Iris, Parlourmaid, played by Alice White; Ella, Sewing Maid, Billy Ducker; Ivy, Kitchenmaid, Doreen Hughes; Mrs Gosling, Cook, Mary Wylde; Mrs Brenda Sykes, Kathleen Hewitt.

The second play “Green Daffodils” by Marion Reid Jamieson: Mrs Baxley (A quiet aloof woman) Verona Looney; Dolly (her daughter) Zoe White; Sarah, her sister (a cripple) Mabel Savage; Mrs Handy (a cheerful neighbour) Leah McConnell; Hilda Prendergast (a morbid neighbour) Alma Eagle; Mrs Dodgson (the vicar’s wife) Marjory White. The final play was “Waltz Time” by Philip Johnson. The characters were: Miss Charlotte Bright, played by Norma White; Miss Lydia Brooks, Lola Savage; Miss Letitia Thurlow, Gwen Mitchell; Miss Alicia Pramley, Betty Boynton; Miss Rosie Pramley, Nola Rust; Lady Bagshot, Muriel Wardlaw; Phoebe, a maid, Kath Savage; Abigail, a maid, Barbara Stevenson.

The sketch was by F. SladenSmith and the scene was laid in “Ye Anciente Crafte Shoppe.” The owner was played by Maisie Cooper and the customej* by June Girven. At the conclusion of the perform-

ance, Mrs Cooper, president of the

Drama Circle, introduced Mrs Rutherford and presented her with two bouquets of spring flowers in appreciation of her great help. All the players taking part did excellently and the plays presented received an excellent hearing.
