WHAKATANE CLUB SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT Perfect golfing weather contributed in good measure towards the success of the weekend tournament played on the Whakatane links. A 72-hole contest is usually regarded as something peculiar to National Open Championships, but the event just held lost none of its interest through lack of a great title. * It found much favour among the players and will, no doubt be looked for in future seasons. In the 72-hole gross competition, fortunes and misfortunes made it appear at the end of the third round that any one of half a dozen players might win. A. G. Cradwick with 243 had a lead of 2 strokes on S. Napier, of Te Awamutu, and a former champion of the Whakatane Club, 4 strokes on N. Hockin and 5 on L. Carter. Carter’s chances faded when he took 88 for the last round, Napier took 83—after a good 78 in the morning—and his total was 328, while Cradwick used 85 strokes mainly through visiting a couple of awkward spots on the course. Hockin worked hard for a 79, his best for the tournament and ran out the winner with 326.
Following are the results’ of all events:—
Saturday Medal: T. A. Bridger 85—15—70; Bogey, W. D. Steel, 1 down; 36-hole gross, N. Hockin 161; 36-hole nett, T. A. Bridger 172 —30—142.
Sunday: Medal, J. Regan . (Te Awamutu) 83—13—-70; Stableford, N. Hockin 35; 36-hole gross, S. Napier (Te Awamutu) 161; 36-hole nett, F. hole gross, N. Hockin 326; 72-hole nett, N. Hockin 326—32—294. Still Another Hole-in-One
The highlight of the weekend tournament was a hole-in-one by A. G. Cradwick at the 14th, a distance of 130 yards, during the first round. This feat has been performed on the links once on each of the last three weekends and players are beginning -to wonder when it will cease. The penalty was duly paid in the customary manner.
