GIBBINGS SHIELD CONTEST GAMES AT TE PUKE Playing characteristically bright and fast basketball, the Rotorua Catholic Basketball Association’s representative A and B teams fought out the final for the Gibbings Shield at Te Puke’s annual tourney on Saturday, the A team running out the victors for the second year in succession. In Section I. Catholic A defeated Whakatane A 7—5; Tauranga A Reserves 7—l; Rotorua A 6—2; Te Puke A 7—5; and Te Puke B 10-—2 in the semi-final. Section 11. saw Catholic B win against Rotorua B 12—0; Tauranga B 7—5; Thornton 6—5; Waimana 12—6; and Torere 9—3 in the semifinal. In the play-off, Catholic B was by no means discredited when it went under to the A team by eight goals to four in a game in which speed was the keynote. Other results were:—

Rotorua A beat Te Puke 9—5; Whakatane beat Rotorua A 6—4; Tauranga Reserves beat Rotorua A 7—3; Rotorua Reserves beat Waimana 11—4; Tauranga B beat Rotorua Reserves 7—3; Thornton beat Rotorua Reserves 6—3; Rotorua B beat Edgecumbe 6—l; Torere beat Rotorua B 6—2; Te Puke Maori beat Rotorua B 12—4; Whakatane Convent beat Rotorua B B—s.
