RUGBY FOOTBALL

SATURDAY’S PLAY REP. GAME DRAWN Play at the Domain on Saturday was marred by a cold strong wind. This made conditions, especially for spectators, very unpleasant. The grounds were in fair condition but were stili showing the effects of the recent rains. No. 1 ground still had the nasty muddy patch which made things unpleasant last week. In the senior .grade Whakatane drew with the visiting Poverty Bay rep. team- 11 all in a .hard game. Play was as fast as conditions would allow. Sure tackling by both teams was a feature of play and some good movements were made by both. In the junior section Paroa defeated Wairaka in a har'd tussle by 12 points to 6. Poroporo suffered a walkover defeat at the hands of United who won 38—0.

From a lineout Waikohu took the ball to the opposite side of the field. H. Bridge put in a brilliant run and dived over in the corner, carrying the corner flag with him. He received treatment from the St. John Ambulance before returning into play. Bridge, a small player, showed a clean pair of heels to anyone on the field when he desired and is a grand little footballer.

Waikohu next took the ball in front of their own goal and streaked through with little opposition. The situation was saved by a blue man who neatly intercepted a pass and found touch with a good kick. The first score was made by Whakatane. A dribbling rush took the bail up and after a long skirmish Te Pou scored in the corner. The kick missed. Whakatane 3, Waikohu 0. Waikohu scored the equaliser just before half-time when Wirangi went over. The kick missed. Whakatane 3, Waikohu 3.

Half-time came with no alteration in the scoring. Soon after half-time Whakatane, with the sun behind them now, took a further 5 points.

A blue man caught him up and tackled him 5-10 yards from the pole. King who was coming up in support took over and scored between the posts. Scholium converted. Whakatane 8, Waikohu 8.

Waikohu put in a determined ef- : fort and got through into Whakatane territory. A series of skirmishes close to the Whakatane goal ended when, from a movement by the backs, Graham went over.
