YOUNG FARMERS CLUB
AWAKERI BRANCH JULY MEETING The Awakeri Young Farmers’ Club held its monthly meeting on July 8 in the Awakeri Hall. Four new members were enrolled bringing the total membership to 28. A field day and dance were arranged for this month. The chairman, Mr C. Martin, was elected our delegate on the Rangitaiki Plains Calf Club. The main interest of the evening was a very instructive short talk by Mr A. J. Rust dealing with some simple experiments with maize which were of great interest to-those Some members of the Awakeri present.
Club entered pigs in the Bay of Plenty Tomoana Porker competition, Mr C. Martin winning a place.
Field Day
On Wednesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. the Awakeri Y.F.C. held its monthly Field Day at the R.P.D. Co’s Pig Farm. The 18 young farmers who attended were shown over the whole farm by the manager, Mr D. M. Thomson.
Before lunch the party was shown the smaller portion of the farm on the eastern side of the road where all were interested in a new type of electric pump installed in the manure sump.
After lunch the party went through the rest of the farm by a circuitous route until the new piggeries under construction, for the farm were reached. Those present were intensely interested in the" whole design and lay out of the scheme, especially the method of feeding the milk from a tank ihounted on an engine driven truck running on tramlines into the individual troughs and the general plan of the runs and shelters. At the close of the tour the club chairman, Mr C. Martin, thanked Mr Thomson for the interesting day that all present had enjoyed. OTAKIRI BRANCH Arrangements were made for a practice debate at . the monthly meeting of the Otakiri Y.F.C. and a social committee of six members was formed. Delegates for the P.M.A. meeting appointed were Messrs. S. McLean and E. Neilson. The delegate for the Rangitaiki Calf Club was Mr M. punning. • •• Mr R. W. Dunning gave a short talk on the new passenger and cargo vessel, “Corinthic.” He said that the vessel was 15,000 tons and had a large cargo space and carried 98 passengers. Mr Dununing had said that he had been very surprised at the small amount of space the engines occupied. Mr Hobson gave a lantern lecture on the various types of bacteria and cells associated with the cowshed. He also described certain types of pond life. Mr Thompson dealt with seasonal troubles including the different types of , grass staggers and their treatment. Milk fever, sterility in bulls and cows, mammitis, the feeding and care of calves were subjects also covered by this speaker. Four new members, Messrs. M. Keir, S. Linsell, J. Strange and C. MacDonald were enrolled.
