LAND ACQUIRED
FOR SETTLEMENT OF EXSERVICEMEN With the acquisition during May of 22,147 acres, the land acquired or held by the Crown for servicemen settlement at the end of that month totalled more than 685,000 acres, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. Of that amount, 338,748 acres have been purchased under the provisions of the Small Farms Act of 1932-33, about 214,000 acres (part already allotted) have been held by the Lands and Survey Department for servicemen settlement, 45,810 acres have been acquired under Part II of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, while under Section 51 of the same Act 60,217 acres have been acquired for sub-division and 26,455 acres in single units. will result in 34 units for settle
ment, 21 for sheep farming, 11 for dairying and two for sundry agricultural purposes. Total units so far acquired, apart from land held by the Lands Department,. number 1220, there beipg 499 for sheepfarming, 678 for dairying and 43 for sundry uses.
Details of the properties acquired during May are included in the statement. They comprise:— Almost 770 acres, previously the property of J. B. and A. B. Bradley, situated three and a half miles north of Rongotea in the- Wellington Land District. Divisible into three dairying and three fat lamb units, the property is to be known as the Mount Stewart Farm Settlement.
About 260 acres six miles from Tokomaru, also in the Wellington Land District, previously belonging to Mr Herman Seifert. To be known as the Rangitane Farm Settlement, the property is to be divided into four dairying farms. Previously the property of R. T. Davies, 490 acres, half a mile east of Oparau, in the Auckland Land District, a sheep farm which will be known as the Parau Farm Settlement.
. Divisible into four units, 508 acres situated six miles north of Rangiora in the Canterbury Land District. This property has been acquired from the estate of A. G. Wylie. Also in the Canterbury Land District, 1285 acres 36 miles north-west of Ashburton, which it is proposed to divide into two sheep farms. The property was acquired from the estate of J. Moore.
A small property* 58 acres, previously belanging to C. J. Dalgety, and situated 12 miles from Utiku, south of Taihape, and which has been purchased to amalgamate it with the Kawkatau Farm Settlement to enable the easier working of one section.
Also to be amalgamated with the Kawhatau Farm Settlement is another 58-acres property near Utiku, previously belonging to D. F. Gorringe. ■ An area of 1537 acres situated 37 miles south of Rotorua, in the Auckland Land District, has been acquired from C. E. Vaile. Another large property acquired in May was the Mangaroa Station, of 8195 acres, previously belonging to the Spence Estate and situated in the Raukitare Valley, 35 miles north of Wairoa in the Gisborne Land District. It is estimated that the property will make four subdivisions. In the Southland Land District, six and a half miles from Otautau, a 577-acres property, sub-divisible into two sheep units. Previously belonging to J. T. Brass, it will be known in future as the Grandview Farm Settlement. Taken under Part II of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land
Sales Act, is an 8403-acres property previously owned by A. R. and D. C. Macfarlane. It is situated in Waiau, in the Canterbury Land District, and should make-'four sheep units. Together with property purchased from J. L. Macfarlane, it will be known as the. Mount Farm Settlement.
During May, 30 sections were ballotted for among eligible ex-service-men applicants. Seven (one sheep and six orchard) were in Hawke’s Bay, three (all sheep) were in the Auckland Land District, four (one dairy, two mixed, and one sheep) were in the Wellington Land District, six (all sheep) were in Canterbury, and ten (all sheep) were in Southland.
