UNIONISM OPPOSED
FIRE BRIGADE ACTION QUESTION OF VOLUNTEER STATUS A movement is afoot to compel all fire brigade volunteers and fulltime firemen to become members of a Fire Brigade Union throughout the Dominion. At a special meeting of the Opo-. tiki Volunteer Fire Brigade on Wednesday the matter was fully discussed and very adverse comments were made about the movement, especially the doing away of the volunteer status. On a secret ballot being taken the proposal was rejected by a 100 per cent, vote of members. Mr F. Mohr, secretary of the Opotiki Fire Board conducted the ballot and acted as scrutineer. Mr G. Peagram, brigade superintendent, left Opotiki last week to attend a conference in Auckland, when the matter will be further dealt with.
