DRAMA EVENING

“CREDIT TO PRODUCER” EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE “A credit to its producer” was the way in which several people who attended described the recent drama evening conducted by the Whakatane Women’s Institute Drama Club. The producer, Rose-anne Rutherford, employed by the Government to travel around the various districts with the aim of co-ordinat-ing the Women’s Institute and Women’s Division.

Mis! Rutherford was capably assisted by Durna Murray (stage manager), Tui Twohill (assistant stage manager) and Myrtle Bai’ker (Properties). Programme The programme consisted of three one-act plays and a sketch. The characters of the first play, “The Rest Cure” were Clarence Reed played by John Inder; Olive, his wife (Isla Ingle); Alice Palmer, the dark cat (Janette McLeod); May Williams, the fair cat (Doris Richardson) and Muriel, servant at the home (Verna Head). The second play, presented by the Edgecumbe Drama Club was entitled “The Shadow Passes.” Characters were: Christina (Ethel Spence); Edith (Elizabeth Thompson); Mercia (Blanche McLean); Gwendolen (Shirley Carter); Carol (Olive Teesdale) and Ellen (Beryl Sewell). The characters in “Charade” the third one-act play were: Janet Colyngham (Beatrice Ker); Rosa Rosario (Ursula Lovelock); Cook (Ruby Murphy.); Iris (Doreen Mussett); Ivy (Helen Cantrell) and Mrs Locket (Dorothy Sims). In the sketch, “Adult Education” the part of the lecturer was played by Mrs Dawson and the assistant by Dorothy Sims. The part of the women were taken by Helen Cantrell, Doreen Mussett, Ruby Murphy, Ursula Lovelock and Beatrice Ker. The plays were presented to a packed house and received a very appreciative hearing. All who participated did a grand job and the excellent manner in which the evening was received was fully merited.
