WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WIIAKATANE BRANCH JULY MEETING The July monthly meeting of the Whakatane Women’s Institute was held in the Methodist Hall. Mrs Barker presided over a very good attendance. The meeting opened with the Aspirations. After the reading of minutes the correspondence was discussed. The Rev. F. A. Thompson gave a very interesting talk on the Lepers and the help given to them by “The Mission to Lepers.” At the last meeting called to form a Junior W.I. was not as well attended as had been hoped. Another meeting is to be held on Monday, July 14, at the residence of Mrs Barker, 33 Louvain Street at 7.30 p.m. It is hoped all intending members will be present.
The entertainment was in the hands of Mrs King, Senr. Miss Dorothy Stewart sang two solos, “Granny’s Heilan’ Hame” and “Coming Thro’ the Rye.” A short biography “Mr J. Morrison a descendant of the Morrison Clan and Chief of the Kaitaia Scottish Society” was read by Mrs King Senr. A few minutes were spent in community singing, Mrs Lysaght being the pianist. Miss Nancy Kilgour, accompanied by Piper Donald McKenzie, danced the Highland Fling. Afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close. Competitions Competitions were won as follows: Violets: Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Hanham 2. Parsnips: Mrs Sutcliffe 1, Mrs Hannah 2. Girdle Scones: Mrs Comer 1, Mrs S. Ker 2. Gardening Circle The gardening circle of the Whakatane W.I. held its June meeting at Mrs Hannah’s residence, Salonika Street, Mrs Fennell presiding over a fair attendance. Each member gave a short seasonal reading. The Roll Call “A Garden I know” was well responded to. Competitions were won as follows:
Best collection of flowers in a basket: Mrs Fennell 1, Mrs Hannah 2. Best Iceland poppy: Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs Guest 2.
Best parsnip: Mrs Hannah 1, Mrs Fennell 2. Arts and Crafts Club
The Arts and Crafts Club had a very interesting day when Mrs Peck of Otakiri, came and gave a demonstration of mop making from used wool.
Since then members have been very busy completing their mops.
