NEWS IN BRIEF
Scout Rally At Whakatane At a conference of the Bay of Plenty Scout Officers held in Whakatane recently, it was decided that the 1948 rally should be held in Whakatane, and that it be recommended that the cub rally be staged at a different date from that of the I scouts. Extra Sugar The release of 31b of sugar on each ration book for making marmalade during the next two months has been announced by the Minister of Supply (the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer). He added that coupon Y 23 would be valid without further no* tice for this amount of sugar from July 1 to August 31. Opossums Cause Power Faults Opossums are causing the Opunake Power Board a headache. They climb power poles, even of concrete, get electrocuted and' sometimes start a fire at the top. The engineer, Mr E. G. Snell, told the board at its monthly meeting that there had been nine interruptions on transformers lately because of opossums. All poles carrying switch gear or transformers on roads where trouble was experienced had now been fitted with opossum guards.
No Harm Hoping There are two classes of people those who are Scots, and those who would like to be. Speaking at the opening of the Pipe Band Hall, Eltham, the Mayor (Mr C. A. Wilkinson) apologised for the fact that he had no Scots blood in him, but he had partly atoned for that by having a Scots wife. Following him, Mr E. B. Corbett, M.P., had a confession to make: “I also have no Scotch in me —yet. But,” he added amid laughter, “I’m hoping.”
