Gallipoli and the Somme
“Your name dates back a very long way with my Colleagues of the R.5.A.,” Mr P. H. Hughes, president of the R.S.A. at Te Kuiti told Lieut.General Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C., at the reception to His Excellency recently. “It dates back to just over 32 years ago, when Your Excellency was first prominent in a very cold swim off Gallipoli Peninsula which brought you the D. 5.0.; it dates back to when on the Somme you earned the highest award for bravery to be won in this Empire, the Victoria Cross; and it has carried on through your equally deserving leadership in this war, while for her work for our lads Lady Freyberg’s name has also been venerated.”
